Interested in an apprenticeship but still in school?

If you are interested in finding a job straight away once you’ve left school, an apprenticeship could be perfect for you. Combining practical skills in the workplace with theoretical study at College you’ll gain a nationally recognised qualification whilst earning a salary at the same time!

Northern Skills Group, Middlesbrough College’s apprenticeship and training company, offers a range of apprenticeship programmes across the North ranging from hairdressing to engineering. They’re the perfect opportunity to get your foot in the door of your chosen industry, and we work with some of the region’s top employers to give the best opportunities for your future. There are three levels of apprenticeships for young people with average GCSE grades through to those with A levels or an Advanced Diploma.

To start an apprenticeship you must be 16 or over and not in full time education.  Apprenticeship training can take between one and four years to complete, but the length of an apprenticeship depends on its level, the industry in question and the skills the apprentice already has.

You can register your interest in pursuing an apprenticeship here but it’s important to remember that the application process is very different to how you’d apply to a course at college. In order to secure an apprenticeship, you need to find an employer willing to take you on. We’d recommend that you get into the habit of checking Northern Skills Group’s apprenticeship vacancies page for the latest jobs coming up in your area. Alternatively, if you know a local business that would be willing to employ you as an apprentice ask them to call 03453 40 40 40 and we’ll do the rest!

To keep your options open, we’d recommend that you also apply for a full time course at Middlesbrough College so that if you are unable to find an employer by September, you can gain a basic understanding of the industry you will be working in as part of your technical certificate. You can continue to search for an apprenticeship once you’ve started a course, and once an employer becomes available then fast-track onto your chosen apprenticeship programme midway through the full time course.  You can browse all of our full time courses here or check out our course guide for further information.
